If you’re pregnant and are looking for a more personalized prenatal experience, you might want to find a care provider that practices some form of holistic pregnancy care. Holistic care focuses on your health and wellness as a whole rather than only paying attention to the physical aspects of pregnancy. If you’re unfamiliar with this type of care, we’ve outlined a few of the benefits of holistic pregnancy care.

1. Holistic Pregnancy Care Focuses on Overall Wellness

To get an idea of the benefits of holistic pregnancy care, you just have to know what holistic medical care actually is. Holistic care means that the entire person is treated rather than just one symptom or issue. That includes mental and social factors as well as physical concerns. Holistic pregnancy care is personalized for each individual person and involves providing care to benefit their total health and wellness.

2. Using A CNM For Holistic Care Is The Best of Both Worlds

Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) are trained in both midwifery and nursing. They are licensed medical professionals, so they can provide care in clinical and hospital settings. But they also embrace the holistic approach to healthcare that is often associated with traditional midwifery. A CNM is truly the best choice of care provider for women who want holistic care as well as access to medical services unlicensed caregivers can’t provide.

Midwives view pregnancy and childbirth as natural processes rather than conditions that need to be treated medically. During labor, midwives start with a non-interventional approach and let things progress naturally. However, because they practice in places like hospitals, they are able to provide medical intervention or collaborate with physicians should the need arise.

3. You Have A Lower Chance of Needing A C-Section

Holistic pregnancy care aims to be as minimally invasive as possible. Midwives believe in letting the process of childbirth occur naturally with minimal intervention. According to a study published in Obstetrics & Gynecology, women with low-risk pregnancies who deliver in a hospital under the care of a CNM have lower rates of interventions and fewer C-sections than similar women who receive care from OB/GYNs. So, if you have a low-risk pregnancy and want to avoid a C-section, your chance of needing one is decreased when you choose a CNM for holistic pregnancy care.

4. Holistic Care Incorporates Different Methods

Because holistic pregnancy care focuses on the overall wellbeing of the mother and baby, it’s possible to incorporate different methods and therapies into your care. Midwives offer comprehensive services that include elements that combine medicine with personal care. For instance, group prenatal care is something a lot of midwives focus on to give mothers-to-be the tools and resources they need to be active participants in managing their health. They can also help you decide on a birth plan that’s right for you, including guiding you through different types of pain management to get you through labor as comfortably as possible.

5. Holistic Care Includes Postpartum Care

Holistic pregnancy care includes caring for mothers and babies in the postpartum period. It all goes back to the definition of the word “holistic.” The need for support and care does not stop as soon as a woman gives birth. That’s why providers who embrace the holistic method of healthcare include personalized postpartum care as part of their services. Providers like CNMs are there to help new mothers heal and recover. They are also there to provide guidance and support for caring for new babies. CNMs can provide support for breastfeeding, calming fussy babies, sleep schedules, and the general transition into parenthood.

*During the COVID-19 pandemic, we are still seeing OB patients for regular appointments and GYN patients for appointments addressing urgent needs. For now, routine in-office gynecological appointments have been put on hold. However, we are offering telemedicine visits for problems that do not require a visit to the office.

We ask that any patient with upper respiratory symptoms call our office for directions rather than coming in. We do not currently have testing capabilities and need to limit possible exposure to other patients.
